Symmetry is where one thing is the mirror opposite of the other thing or two things are in balance with each other even if they are not exactly the same. The Yin Yang symbol is one example of this. There is also the gaming concept of unbalanced equality where two things are functionally equivalent even if they are otherwise dissimilar.
Humans are bilaterally symmetrical meaning our left side mirrors our right side. We respond better to or prefer things which are symmetrical. Doing something and then undoing it is also a form of symmetry. We mentally respond better to that which is symmetrical or balanced. Things which are unbalanced can cause a form of Cognitive Dissonance and feel wrong often without knowing why it feels wrong. Knowing when to have things in balance or out of balance is part of learning how to effectively use this tool.
